City honours Soweto’s music icon; Winnie Khumalo

The City of Johannesburg (CoJ) is mourning the loss of a true South African musical icon, Winnie Khumalo, whose untimely passing has left an indelible void in the hearts of many.

CoJ’s speaker of council, Nobuhle Mthembu, expressed deep sorrow in a heartfelt statement, describing Khumalo as “one of Soweto’s brightest stars and South Africa’s musical treasures”.

Khumalo’s illustrious career began in the 1980s when her soulful vocals and vibrant stage presence captivated audiences across the country.

A singer, songwriter, and actress, Khumalo’s life epitomised resilience, artistry, and passion. From working alongside legendary artists like Brenda Fassie to becoming an icon in her own right, she was a trailblazer whose work inspired joy, hope and celebration.

Her music not only resonated with audiences but also cemented her place as a beacon for aspiring young artists.

“She stood as proof that with determination, consistency, and talent, one could rise to national and international acclaim,” said Mthembu.

Khumalo’s contribution to South African music and culture remains unmatched. As a mother, artist, and pioneer, her artistry carried not only melodies but also the dreams and aspirations of a generation.

Her legacy will live on in the hearts of those who danced to her music and in the vibrant cultural heritage of Soweto.
