Local church celebrates 60th anniversary

The St Margaret Catholic Church proudly commemorates its 60th anniversary, marking six decades of faith, community service, and spiritual guidance.

Since its establishment in 1964, St. Margaret has been a cornerstone of some of the residents of Soweto, fostering unity, hope, and charity among its congregants and beyond.

To celebrate this milestone, the church hosted a grand anniversary event, attended by parishioners, clergy, and community leaders.

The event featured a special thanksgiving mass, presided over by His Lordship Bishop Edward Risi, alongside several former priests of St. Margaret.

The celebration was further enriched by the presence of three novitiates and six nuns, the program continued with inspiring speeches, a congratulatory letter from Archbishop Cardinal Stephen Brislin, uplifting choir performances, a historical exhibition showcasing the church’s rich legacy, and a ceremonial cake cutting.

Speaking at the event, Bishop Edward Risi expressed deep gratitude for the church’s journey, stating, “For 60 years, St. Margaret Catholic Church has been a place of worship, healing, and outreach.

“We honor our past, celebrate our present, and embrace our future with faith and dedication.

“Throughout the years, St. Margaret Catholic Church has played a vital role in community development, offering educational programs, charitable initiatives, and spiritual guidance.

“The church remains committed to its mission of service, ensuring that it continues to be a beacon of hope for future generations.

“As part of the anniversary celebrations, St Margaret is launching a series of outreach programs, including youth mentorship, food donation drives, and a church restoration project to preserve its historical significance.”

Bishop Siri added that the church was founded in 1964, and has been a spiritual home for thousands of parishioners in Soweto.

“The church is dedicated to promoting faith, education, and community empowerment through various ministries and outreach programs. Our celebration motto was prayer, unity, care and self-reliance.”
