Senior citizens get a treat in Braamfischerville

Granny’s Day is an initiative that takes place every year on Wednesday of the week of Good Friday.

The Ebenezer Child Development Programme hosted a granny’s day event on April 16, at Braamficherville.

The day was dedicated to giving the little ones a platform to share the Easter and Passover stories they’ve been learning and to boldly minister to the elders about the importance of honouring and acknowledging the Lord in their lives, and what happened to God during Good Friday.

Ebenezer Child Development Programme Principal, Boemo Bogatsu said Granny’s Day is an initiative that takes place every year on Wednesday of the week of Good Friday.

“This day serves as a reminder to the elderly about Christ, His sacrifice on the cross, and the significance of this weekend. As Ebenezer is a Christian-based edu-care centre and we also chose to invite social workers because, throughout the year, many elderly individuals are responsible for caring for their grandchildren, often in situations where the parents are neglectful. We believe these caregivers need support and someone to talk to,” she said.

She further stated that it is important for the elderly to attend these sessions because help and assistance are brought directly to them, even if they cannot afford to visit NPOs, NGOs, or government offices.

Social worker, Thembelihle Buthelezi said it is important for them to bring their services to the community and make the public aware of their role in people’s lives.

“As we are here today, we have observed many of the social ills that the elderly face.

“Older individuals often encounter various issues and don’t know where to turn for help. By being here today, we help them feel at ease and ensure they know where to go for assistance, as we connect them with the appropriate services,” explained Buthelezi.

Julia Makhado said the initiative held at Ebenezer Child Development Programme makes them feel special and proud of being a grandmother to someone.

“Seeing the young ones singing for us has really cheered me up. Today was indeed a productive day for us elderly individuals.

“Watching the social workers engage with us, allowing us to ask questions, share our problems, and receive answers about the issues we face, has truly been helpful,” said Makhado.
