City of Joburg takes stand against illegal dumping

Mayor Dada Morero launches KleenaJoburg 100 Spots Campaign to transform 100 dumping sites.

The Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Councillor Dada Morero, officially launched the highly anticipated KleenaJoburg 100 Spots Campaign at Senaone Park on June 3.

This transformative initiative aims to rehabilitate 100 illegal dumping sites scattered across the municipality, reinforcing the city’s commitment to sustainable waste management and improving the overall quality of life for Johannesburg residents.

The KleenaJoburg 100 Spots Campaign is part of the broader Mayoral Rehabilitation Campaign, which seeks to unite a diverse range of stakeholders.

Mayor Dada Morero outlined the objectives of the KleenaJoburg 100 Spots Campaign.

This collaborative effort includes Pikitup, the city’s waste management entity, various municipal departments, local community members, informal traders, and essential law enforcement agencies.

“We have decided to put an end to illegal dumping sites in Johannesburg, starting with Senaone, which we are transforming into a park for children to play in.

“We will continue to tackle other dumping sites, creating spaces for businesses and opportunities for young people to use these areas productively,” said Morero.

Morero urged the Ward 15 community to take care of the park, emphasising that it would ultimately benefit them.

Philisiwe Twala-Tau, head of the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) in Gauteng, stated: “Illegal dumping sites not only create filth but also foster criminal activity, as criminals often use them as hiding spots.

SALGA partnered with City Parks and the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment to plant trees at Senaone Park.

“Through the KleenaJoburg 100 Spots Campaign, we are committed to working with communities around all 100 sites.”

“We are excited and thankful to the mayor for fixing our park. Now we will have a space to exercise and participate in extracurricular activities. We are also grateful for the new bins,” said Lizzy Nkutha, a resident of Phiri.
