Protea South grannies provide toothbrushes and sanitary pads to local learners
A total of 84 boys received toothpaste and toothbrushes, while 192 girl learners were given sanitary towels as part of the donation.
As part of efforts to encourage good hygiene and combat poor hygiene, Protea South Senior Citizens Club (PSSCC) donated essential health hygiene products to learners at Protea South Primary School on September 10.
A total of 84 boys received toothpaste and toothbrushes, while 192 girl learners were given sanitary towels as part of the donation.
Chairlady of the PSSCC, Rebecca Tloubatla, said the organisation saw the need to donate hygiene essentials because many learners at the school live in a disadvantaged area, where several parents are unemployed and struggle to meet their children’s needs. That is why they felt it was important to help where they can.

“We thought it was important to give back, even with the little support we receive from SASSA. When we see the learners at the hall drinking water, we notice that many boys have poor dental hygiene and bad breath. I often talk to them to learn about their living situations, and it’s easy to identify children in need.
“As elders, we felt that this year we should go the extra mile and include boys in our donation, because we usually focus on girls,” she said.
Tloubatla said they find it meaningful to support the learners through initiatives like this. They believe it is important to ensure that children go to school hygienic, because it takes a village to raise a child.

Speaking to Urban News, Protea South Primary School Principal Abigail Guza thanked the senior citizens for donating hygiene products to the learners.
“I would like to thank the grannies for bringing toothpaste, toothbrushes, and sanitary towels. These products will really help our children, as we are in a disadvantaged area and these items are much needed.
“I’m also glad that the boys were included in this donation. We appreciate what the elders are doing for the school and hope they continue to receive blessings for their generosity,” said Guza.
