Home Affairs extends operating hours for smart ID and passport services

Home Affairs offices, including branches in Soweto, will open two extra hours daily to improve access to smart ID and passport services. Residents are encouraged to book appointments online, though walk-ins will still be assisted.

The Department of Home Affairs has announced that offices processing Smart ID cards and passports, including branches in Soweto, will operate with two additional hours daily from December 8.

The department says the move forms part of its ongoing efforts to restore dignity and improve service accessibility for all South Africans.

Residents are urged to schedule application or collection appointments through the Branch Appointment Booking System (BABS) available on the department’s website.

Walk-in clients will continue to be assisted, ensuring everyone can access the services they need.

Minister of Home Affairs, Dr Leon Schreiber, said the department remains committed to providing accessible, people-centred services.

He encouraged citizens to use the extended hours to update essential documents, including travel documents.

Ministerial spokesperson Carli van Wyk added that the extended hours aim to ensure more communities receive services efficiently, reducing waiting times and improving overall service delivery.

Residents can visit the Home Affairs website for more information on office locations, operating hours, and booking procedures.
