Cars linked to cash-in-transit robbery recovered in Meadowlands

The vehicles are suspected to have been involved in a cash-in-transit robbery in Roodepoort.

Two cars suspected to have been used as getaway vehicles following a cash-in-transit robbery in Roodepoort were found at a house in Meadowlands, Soweto, shortly after the incident on January 10.

The vehicles, a white BMW and a Nissan Hardbody bakkie, were confirmed to have been hijacked in Gauteng and the North West.

A white BMW suspected to have been used as a getaway vehicle in the Roodepoort cash-in-transit robbery was recovered at a house in Meadowlands, Soweto.

It was reported that earlier that day a cash-in-transit armoured vehicle, escorted by a security officer driving behind it, was rammed by a Mercedes-Benz travelling in the opposite direction on Elias Motsoaledi Road in Roodepoort.

The cash van capsized, additional suspects joined the scene and explosives were used on the vehicle, while other suspects engaged in a shoot-out with the security officer in the escort vehicle.

The suspects then disarmed the three security officers inside the cash van and stole an undisclosed amount of money. They set alight the Mercedes-Benz used to ram the cash van and fled the scene in two BMWs and a Nissan Hardbody bakkie.

A Nissan Hardbody bakkie, believed to be one of the suspects’ escape vehicles and reported hijacked earlier, was found alongside a BMW during a police operation in Meadowlands.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed that a swift response by members of SAPS, Gauteng Traffic Police and private security led to the discovery of a BMW and Nissan Hardbody at a house.

“Two people, a man and a woman, were found inside the house and taken in for questioning,” said Masondo.
