Motorists urged to take care when driving in rainy weather
Motor Industry Workshop Association warns that wet roads, poor visibility and potholes increase driving risks.
With Gauteng experiencing frequent bouts of rain, the Motor Industry Workshop Association (MIWA), an association of the Retail Motor Industry Organisation (RMI), is urging motorists to take extra precautions when driving in wet conditions.
“Rain may seem routine, but it significantly increases the risks on the road,” says Dewald Ranft, chairperson of MIWA. “Reduced visibility, slippery surfaces, water collecting on roads and the sudden appearance of potholes can all create hazardous driving conditions.”
Hydroplaning – when tyres lose contact with the road due to a layer of water – can occur even during moderate rainfall if drivers are travelling too fast.
“Visibility is another major concern during rainy weather,” he says.
“Heavy rain, spray from other vehicles and overcast conditions can make it harder to see clearly, while many traffic lights stop working during storms, creating additional confusion at busy intersections.”
Rain can also worsen road surface conditions.
“Potholes often open up or expand after rainfall as water seeps into cracks in the road surface. Drivers may not see these hazards in time, especially if they are hidden by standing water.”
To reduce risks in rainy conditions, MIWA recommends the following:
• Slow down and increase following distance – wet roads require longer stopping distances
• Use headlights appropriately – low-beam headlights improve visibility and help other drivers see you
• Approach intersections with caution – especially where traffic lights may not be functioning
• Avoid sudden braking or sharp steering – gentle inputs help prevent skidding
• Watch out for puddles – they may conceal potholes or debris
• Check your tyres – adequate tread depth and correct tyre pressure are critical in wet conditions
• Ensure wipers are working properly – replace worn wiper blades that leave streaks or reduce visibility
Ranft adds that drivers should remain especially alert during peak traffic periods when congestion, poor visibility and wet road surfaces combine to increase the likelihood of accidents.
“Most rain-related incidents can be avoided with a few simple precautions,” he says. “Slowing down, maintaining your vehicle and staying alert to changing road conditions can make a significant difference.”
For professional vehicle checks and maintenance, motorists are encouraged to visit an accredited MIWA workshop to ensure their vehicles remain safe and roadworthy in all weather conditions.
