Gauteng warns of RDP housing scams on TikTok
MEC Tasneem Motara urges residents to stay alert as fake housing deals spread online.
Gauteng Human Settlements MEC Tasneem Motara has warned residents to remain on high alert following a rise in scams linked to RDP housing, particularly on social media platforms such as TikTok.
The warning follows a viral video showing a man claiming to rent out RDP houses, sparking widespread concern. The individual has since retracted the statement, saying it was intended as a joke and that he is not involved in such activities.

Motara stressed that renting out an RDP house or selling it within the first eight years of receiving a title deed is illegal. She urged residents, especially in Gauteng, to remain cautious when engaging with online content.
The department has intensified efforts to tackle fraudulent housing activities. Motara confirmed that legal action is underway against an individual accused of illegally selling land in the inner city, with the matter before the courts.
Residents have also been urged to look out for common warning signs of scams, including individuals claiming to represent the department while requesting communication via WhatsApp, which is not an official channel.
Motara further cautioned against fake posters and messages that misuse official branding.

She advised the public to check logos and signatures carefully, as scammers often replicate these inaccurately.
She added that any request for payment into personal bank accounts, including those from major banks, in exchange for housing applications or allocations, should be treated as fraudulent.
Motara reiterated that residents must never pay anyone for RDP housing applications or allocations and should avoid engaging in illegal housing-related activities.
