Diepkloof family appeals for help after devastating house fire

A suspected electrical fire left a Diepkloof family homeless and without basic necessities, prompting an appeal for public assistance.

Simphiwe Ntuli and his family are seeking donations after their RDP house was destroyed by a fire on the morning of June 01 in Diepkloof Zone 3.

According to Ntuli, he was sleeping in the room where the fire allegedly started when he was awakened by smoke.

“When I woke up, there was smoke in the whole room. I then managed to get out and scream for help from one of the tenants. My nearby friends also came and assisted me to extinguish the fire, but I was unable to save any of my belongings,” Ntuli said.

Ntuli said a lot of their belongings perished in the fire, including a television, sound system, couches and all his clothing.

“I suspect an electrical fault because the fire started abruptly. The assistance I need is any form of donations, especially clothes; it’s now winter, and all my clothes were destroyed by the fire. I am pleading with residents to assist me. I would appreciate any form of donations or assistance.”

One of the residents who came to Ntuli’s rescue when informed about the damage, Bobo Mohlabi, said the community has tried to assist where they can.

However, one of the main concerns is that the house needs refurbishment since the windows and doors were all destroyed.

“You can just imagine how they are sleeping in this cold weather. We are pleading with those who have means to come on board and assist the family.

“The community has been here assisting with the cleanup and have donated non-perishable items. The Department of Social Development also came through to assess the damage and donated a few items as well, but we are also calling on other offices to come and assist,” Mohlabi said.

Residents who would like to make donations may contact Mohlabi on 083 994 1742.
