Police warn against vigilantism during weekly anti-migrant protests

Police have warned that intimidation, discrimination and the unlawful questioning of people will not be tolerated as weekly anti-migrant protests continue across the country.

Police have warned that acts of vigilantism, intimidation, discrimination, harassment, and the unlawful stopping or questioning of people will not be tolerated during planned weekly anti-migrant protests.

The warning follows an announcement by the March and March Movement that it will continue holding anti-migrant protests every Thursday until the government demonstrates that it is taking the organisation’s demands seriously.

Police spokesperson Cherelle Ehlers said only duly authorised law enforcement officials may request and verify identity documents while carrying out their official duties.

She said members of the public who take the law into their own hands by stopping, questioning or intimidating others could face legal consequences.

Police reiterated that while the right to peaceful protest is protected, it must be exercised within the confines of the law and without infringing on the rights and dignity of others.
