Community clothing drive brings hope to families in need
The Hand That Gives founder Tshidi Sekoati-Vilakazi hosted her annual community giveaway, providing free clothing, blankets, shoes and household essentials to families in need.
Community volunteer and founder of The Hand That Gives, Tshidi Sekoati-Vilakazi, affectionately known as Mum Tshidi, once again brought hope to many families through her annual community giveaway on July 18.
This marked the third successful year of the initiative, which began in 2024 with the aim of encouraging people to donate pre-loved clothing and other essential household items for distribution, free of charge, to those in need.
What started as a WhatsApp group with a heartfelt appeal for donations has grown into a much-loved community initiative.

Each year, generous individuals answer the call by donating clothing, shoes, blankets, kitchenware, toys and other everyday essentials. These donations are then sorted and made available to members of the community, restoring dignity and bringing relief to many households.
This year’s event was another overwhelming success. Community members arrived with excitement and gratitude as they selected items for themselves and their families.
The atmosphere was filled with smiles, appreciation and the true spirit of giving that Nelson Mandela inspired throughout his life.
Speaking after the event, Mum Tshidi expressed her heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed.

“This initiative would not be possible without the kindness of people who open their hearts by donating.
“Every item donated finds a home where it is truly appreciated. Together, we are proving that even small acts of kindness can make a big difference in someone’s life,” she said.
She also expressed gratitude to every volunteer and supporter who helped organise the event, as well as the residents who continue to believe in the vision of The Hand That Gives.
“As Mandela Month reminds South Africans to dedicate 67 minutes to serving others, The Hand That Gives has demonstrated that the spirit of service can extend far beyond 67 minutes. It is about building a caring community where neighbours uplift one another and where generosity creates hope for those facing difficult circumstances.
“With three successful events completed since our launch, The Hand That Gives continues to grow from strength to strength, proving that when a community comes together with compassion, everyone benefits.”
