Speke Society celebrates Killarney women and members

After 32 years of partnership, community service and longstanding relationships, the Speke Society honoured the women of Killarney and its own members during a recent Women’s Month lunch in Orlando West.

The celebration recognised the women who have supported the organisation since its establishment, including those who have allowed members to park outside their yards since 1994.

According to Speke Society founder Sydney Mbatha, what began as a simple gesture of providing parking has developed into a lasting relationship built on trust, respect and mutual support.

“The mothers and sisters of Killarney opened their yards and their hearts to us without ever asking for anything in return,” said Mbatha. “They have become our mothers, our protectors, and our biggest supporters.”

The women’s contribution extends beyond providing parking. Over the years, they have offered members water on hot days, welcomed them into their homes during events, safeguarded belongings and provided encouragement.

Mbatha described their consistent support as one of the foundations of the organisation’s 32-year journey.

“One memorable moment that will always stay with us from our early years is how the women of Killarney would still make sure our members were welcomed and safe,” Mbatha said.

The Women’s Month lunch was also an opportunity to recognise women within Speke Society families, who the organisation said had supported its members by caring for their homes, assisting with events and offering encouragement.

The organisation also expressed gratitude to local sponsors for providing T-shirts for the celebration, highlighting the importance of local businesses and individuals in supporting community initiatives.

“When local businesses step in to sponsor T-shirts, food, or logistics, they are not just sponsoring an event; they are investing in community unity and in preserving a 32-year legacy,” said Mbatha.

“When we reflect on this milestone, the 32 years is a testament to the values of respect, unity and community service. Speke Society is more than an organisation — it is a brotherhood, a family, and a pillar of community discipline and togetherness.”

The organisation emphasised that the anniversary was not solely about its members, but everyone who contributed to its journey.
