ActionSA launches one million-tree initiative across Gauteng
The trees will be planted across public spaces in Orange Farm, Diepsloot, Ivory Park, Lenasia and Alexandra.
ActionSA Johannesburg mayoral candidate Herman Mashaba hosted the launch of a tree-planting initiative in Doornkop on Tuesday.
The initiative began at Mayibuye Primary School, with ActionSA leadership working in collaboration with local activists, community members and stakeholders to encourage residents to take personal responsibility for maintaining the dignity of public spaces.
About one million trees are set to be planted across Gauteng as part of an initiative aimed at creating cleaner, safer and more sustainable communities in Soweto and townships across the province.

The trees will be planted across public spaces in Orange Farm, Diepsloot, Ivory Park, Lenasia and Alexandra.
At the launch, Mashaba was supported by ActionSA Gauteng provincial chairperson Funzi Ngobeni, ActionSA Johannesburg regional chairperson Themba Mabunda and ActionSA Johannesburg regional secretary Lebo Mokoka.
According to Mashaba, various neighbourhoods across Johannesburg lack public spaces that promote environmental sustainability and improve the living conditions of residents.
He said the situation in Soweto and other townships reflects communities that have been neglected, with residents facing inadequate service delivery, a lack of beautified public spaces and recreational facilities that respond to ongoing climate-sensitive challenges.

“The initiative is one of the ways ActionSA is demonstrating its commitment to greener communities and active citizenry, encouraging residents to play a meaningful role in improving public spaces in their neighbourhoods,” he said.
ActionSA has encouraged South Africans to register to vote ahead of the local government elections on November 4, 2026.
