Pimville teachers host a reading festival

After recognising that literacy levels in Pimville were below standard, different librarians from different primary schools in the township organised a reading festival at Tshebedisano Primary School last Friday.

“We saw the need to improve pupils’ literacy levels and a reading festival was what everyone needed,” said Maureen Makhutle a teacher and librarian at Nkholi Primary School.

Apart from pupils showing off their reading skills, there were other activities that brought the literary levels higher than what they already were.

Pimville Primary School pupils not only showed off their reading skills, but they also showed off their dancing by presenting a modern dance number.

Leihlo Primary School and Paul Mosaka Primary School pupils recited a choral verse and showed off their reading levels.

Tshebedisano Primary School sang songs that not only got the crowd going but also made sure that everyone knew the lyrics to the songs they were singing.

Sipho Hotstix Mabuza a well known musician, who recently completed his schooling career by passing Matric, emphasised the importance of reading.

Hannah Bartlet from the Department of Education District 10 thanked the teachers and librarians for their initiatives and urged them to continue working towards improving literary levels of pupils.

“Teachers play a huge role in educating pupils and it is up to everyone to contribute in improvement of literary levels in our pupils,” she said.

The day came to an end when pupils from Khandubuhle Primary school performed a traditional isiZulu dance and Nkholi Primary School pupils performed a SeSotho traditional dance.
