Diepkloof tournament to rehabilitate drug addicts

Being part of a soccer team requires discipline and helps avoid troubles.

The Aganani Akanani Winter Programme is hosting a soccer tournament in Diepkloof during the school holidays, Ermon Masemola the Founder of AAWP and philanthropist said, “The programme is really a movement that is meant to challenge nyaope and drug Abuse, we are fighting drug addiction through sports.”

On July 6 FC Barcelona won 5-1 against Scorpions FC in Diepkloof, Banele Mbengeni of Scorpions FC said, “I am disappointed we lost, but I think we can still improve, thanks to The Programme, it has given us a chance to seriously play soccer.”

Mbengeni said he hopes the tournament grows and reaches more areas in Diepkloof. Phillip Nkoane of FC Barcenal said he loves soccer and having such programmes motivates him.

Nkoane said, “Being part of a soccer team requires discipline and helps me avoid troubles.”

One of the goal scorers, Nkosikhona Matsepe of Barcenal FC said, “Even though our head coach wasn’t present, we managed to win because we play as a team. I hope our level of discipline elevates and we have more Tournaments.

Coach Lehlogonolo Mokoena said, “It takes time and patience to develop the boys. They show commitment, discipline and passion for soccer and we hope they make it to professional Leagues.”

The programme is being supported by organisations like RADA and Seed to a Flower, which is campaigning against drug abuse.

Masemola said, “Drug abuse is a huge problem in the community of Diepkloof and Soweto, the aim is to establish the tournament and expand it so that more zones in Diepkloof and other areas in Soweto can participate.”
