Wilfdlife in Crisis centre in crisis
The centre is doing a good job in rehabilitating birds and other animals
The Wild Life in Crisis centre in Vischkuil, is in need of assistance with maintaining injured and distressed animals and birds.
The Non-profit Organisation (NPO) rescues, rehabilitates and releases these animals and birds.
It is run by Ken and Judy Davidson, who are well qualified and handle anything from baby bats to duiker, hedgehogs and tortoises up to a rhino.
Many baby barn owls reared by them were released back into the wild.
They have recently nursed a white stork’s broken wing and reared three baby sparrows that were taken to them in desperation. They were released when they were ready.
Gail McKerchar from Elandsvlei Conservancy says some of their members visited the Wild Life in Crisis centre to help scrub floors, clean and disinfect bird cages and paint outside benches with donated creosote.
“We know exactly how much work goes into running a haven such as theirs,” she adds.
Some of their members have taken sell-by date fruit and vegetables to the centre in Vischkuil to feed the animals.
At the crisis centre they have incubators for baby animals and this adds to the electricity bill.
Ken and Judy rely on donations to run the centre. How does one equate payment for what they do at all times of the day or night?
One of the big mining houses was assisting with sponsorship but sadly this has come to an end and so they themselves and the centre are now in crisis.
Gail says unfortunately Ken is in poor health and has been forbidden to help physically in any way, as this almost cost him his life the last time he attempted to be physically active too soon.
Therefore they have to rely on their present volunteers, for which they are most grateful.
Currently they have two helpers who help with washing windows, washing dirty bird dishes and birds towels, cutting the grass and assisting outside three times a week or whenever they can afford them.
“This is a heartfelt appeal from me on behalf of the crisis centre for assistance from the public,” says Gail.
The work that they do cannot be measured by money and requires such love and dedication.
