Gauteng Flying Squad Germiston Unit arrested four suspects after two rhino horns were found in their vehicle in Geduld on Monday afternoon.
The four suspects, aged between 30 and 40 years, are charged with possession of rhino horns.
Police were on routine patrols when they spotted two suspicious looking vehicles parked in an open field next to Paul Kruger Highway.
Ekurhuleni East Cluster spokesperson Capt Thivhulawi Tshilate says the driver of the silver Mercedes Benz sped off when he noticed the police, but police managed to stop the driver of a white Ford Ranger.
Police conducted a stop and search and found the two rhino horns in the back of the Ranger.
“The suspects were immediately arrested after they couldn’t explain from where they had obtained rhino horns,” says Tshilate.
Springs Police Station commander Brig Thembeka Gwebushe applauded the two observant police officers for their wonderful work.
An unlicensed firearm was confiscated as well.
The suspects will appear in the Springs Magistrate’s Court soon.
