Man dies after falling in grain silo

A worker heard the screams of a man who fell into a grain silo near Persida on Wednesday morning.

According to Capt Johannes Ramphora, Springs police spokesperson, farm workers were loading mealies onto a conveyor belt which runs to the silo.

“One of the workers heard someone screaming and realised his co-worker had fallen into the silo,” says Ramphora.

Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Services and ER24 paramedics were called to the scene at 9.15am.

Upon investigation, paramedics found some of the workers had already begun to empty the silo of grain where the man lay trapped.

Paramedics, fire services and farm workers worked for a few hours in an attempt to empty the silo and gain access to the man.

Ramphora says after some time paramedics and rescue workers managed to free the man (age unknown).

“Unfortunately, the man had already died of his injuries and nothing more could be done for him,” says Russell Meiring, ER24 spokesperson.

The man was declared dead at the scene.
