Senior Centre warms up Springs.

Neil Mackenzie says that around 100 people show up sometimes for a cup of soup.

As part of their ongoing effort to provide relief to the homeless and unemployed in Springs, volunteers from the Senior Centre hold a soup kitchen on Springs’ Wit Road near Molendam on Wednesday morning.

The soup is especially welcoming and warming as temperatures begin to plummet, and Springs starts to experience its lowest temperatures of the year.

Members of the Senior Centre are responsible for the preparation and handing out of the soup.

Colin Mackenzie, a member of the centre, gets sponsors for the food and bread, and drives his van with volunteers down to where help is needed and hands out soup and bread.

The soup is handed out four times a week and people gather around eagerly to grab a steaming cup.

Sandra Gundlach volunteered to help Mackenzie out and says that “volunteering really opens up your eyes to how some people in the community are living”.
