As a consequence of the constant loitering, the hotel suffered a large amount of damage on the inside and outside due to theft and vandalism.
In recent years, steel gates as well as burglary bars were installed to curb vandalism and looting.
Some residents alleged that homeless people were occupying the hotel at night but no evidence was found to back up this claim.
Residents also felt that the abandoned and vandalised building had become an eyesore.
According to contractor Foster Mthungwa, they were contracted to paint the building’s façade and fix and clean up the rooms.
