Police team up for crime prevention operation

Illegal mining equipment seized during joint operation

A joint crime prevention operation by Springs police, the EMPD, Gauteng Traffic Police and SANDF was conducted in Springs last Wednesday.

Springs police spokesperson Capt Johannes Ramphora says traffic fines valued at R3 000 were issued during the first phase of the operation, which took place at the intersection of Ermelo Road and the R42.

Some of the violations for which motorists were fined included driving without a seat belt, driving with an expired licence, no number plate attached to the car and travelling with an expired permit.

Over 20 cars and 89 people were searched.

During the second phase of the operation, led by Vispol head Col Eric Mhlongo, the team searched an illegal mining operation in Struisbult.

While no arrests were made, police confiscated a wheelbarrow, three picks, six spades and three water pumps.

The last phase of the operation was conducted in the Everest informal settlement, where police raided two illegal mining yards.

Police confiscated five steel rods, 12 penduka stands,19 pendukas, 139 steel balls, 19 plastic buckets, two spades, six steel pots, one cutting torch, two cutting torch gauges, one 9kg gas cylinder and one 10kg oxygen cylinder.

The police also confiscated liquor, a fridge and a music system from a shebeen in the informal settlement, which were booked in at the Springs Police Station.
