"They then had the cheek to fill our shopping bags with exclusive clothes.”
This week we look back at the Advertiser’s December 17, 1993, edition.
• Robbers take goods worth R60 000
Rob Holmes, manager of Gino Armani, an exclusive men’s clothing line store on the corner of Fourth Avenue and Fourth Street, said he was sitting behind his desk when an unknown man entered the store, cocked a weapon and pointed it in his direction.
Earlier, at about 08:30, three men entered the store pretending to look at the shoes on display.
“I was told to remain seated while they snatched all the money from the till.
“My two shop assistants and I were robbed of all our personal belongings, including wristwatches, wallets and my wedding ring,” said Holmes.
He added that while all this was happening, another two men joined their accomplices.
“They then had the cheek to fill our shopping bags with exclusive clothes.
“They were very calm and cool and loaded the goods in a silver Jetta that was parked outside the store. I was hoping someone outside would see what was going on but maybe it was better they didn’t or someone could have been shot,” said Holmes.
The clothing stolen from the store includes expensive tops, shoes and leather jackets.

• Challenge, says pastor
Sitting slap-bang in the middle of a situation is the Pinkster Protestante Kerk (PPK) Edelweiss, Tabernakel.
To the immediate right of this church is a hotel, and on the left is a casino.
And to crown it all, there is now the new escort agency opening up opposite them next year.
The congregation moved to the old Springs cinema in Third Avenue last year because their church in Edelweiss was getting too small.
Past Johan du Toit said he was unaware of the Six to Six VIP Club until a Springs councillor phoned him on Monday.
The Advertiser asked him how he felt about the opening of the escort agency near his church.
“It’s a great challenge for the church to bring more souls to Jesus,” said du Toit.
“It’s the duty of the town’s fathers to guard over the moral standards of the town because they said they will rule Springs by Christian values.
“I’m not here to judge people and the sins they commit because Jesus has died for those sins already. I am here to tell people who have fallen into sin that Jesus loves them, cares about them and wants to cleanse them,” said the pastor.

Two weeks into their stop-smoking challenge and still going strong!
Twelve ex-smokers are struggling through the weeks to get to the beginning of January in the hope of winning R1 000.
Last week, the challenge at Cassey’s Ford was revealed when 16 people decided to give up smoking and force their fellow employees to work in misery with their irritable moods.
Since the contest began, four people have dropped out of the campaign and the rest are still ‘going strong’, according to Brian Holmner, the company’s MD.
“We’re doing very well,” he said.
“We’ve been going for two weeks now, and are still going strong.”
Four people, Piet Jacobs, Rassie Venter, Bets van der Walt and Johan Bredenkamp, have dropped out.
“Last week was difficult, but we’re not ratty this week at all,” said Holmner.
