History is made as the War Memorial fountain flows again
Hope has been resorted to the town of Springs as one of the most beloved monuments has come back to life.
The once derelict and neglected fountain situated within the War Memorial flows once more.
In a historical moment on Friday, the fountain that had been dormant for 35 years was brought back to life.
This is in line with the restoration of the town and its heritage sites.
Dirk Human, the director of Jr Mackays Diesel and Motor Engineering, said everyone has been inspired by the War Memorial.
Speaking to Sandra Gaitskill, who is also from Jr Mackays Diesel and Motor Engineering, she lamented on the previous state of the memorial.
“People had vandalised the memorial and it was in a terrible state,” she said.
Asking her what inspired them as an organisation to take a more proactive approach, she replied, “After the first clean-up, investing in the War Memorial and the fountain felt like a calling.
“By restoring this end of Springs, we hope to bring hope to others and other local businesses to keep their parts of Springs clean. We hope to have sparked a domino effect.”
Kgoputjo Phala and Mashishimane Phogole, who are ward committee members under environmental development, were at the memorial planting beds of grass.
“We hope that people can be inspired to do this for the whole of Springs. The fountain on 12th Street needs the same love and attention. I pray a business adopts it and restores it to its former glory,” said Phala.
A grand opening of the War Memorial will be taking place at a later stage.
