Enjoy a feast of funny with Dinner for one

Dinner for one presents the 90th birthday of elderly upper-class Englishwoman Miss Sophie Eve.

The classical black and white film, Dinner for one by Laurie Wylie, viewed by millions on Old Year’s Eve, will now be presented as a theatre production by Lefra Productions.

A preview will be staged at the Ken Gampu Theatre (Springs Civic Theatre) on Friday at 19:00 (March 31).

This comical play subsequently became the most frequently repeated television programme ever, according to the Guinness Book of Records.

The black-and-white 1963 TV recording, featuring British comedians Freddie Frinton and May Warden, has become an integral component of the New Year’s Eve television schedule of several countries.

This has a very great deal to do with the extremely physical nature of the comedy. The show will premiere at the Oppiwater Arts Festival from April 11 to 15.

The production boasts two of South Africa’s most popular actors, Elma Potgieter (7de Laan, Wielie Walie, Villa Rosa) and Justin Strydom (Diepe Waters, High Rollers, District 9).

The play was directed and adapted by Frans Swart. Swart says that Dinner for one is an ideal play for the stage.

“This a wonderful play with a laugh every minute and we also have a surprise for audiences,” said Swart

“After the interval, we will present a South African spoof, Sopper vir een. In this play, the actors will change roles. Miss Sophie will then be played by Justin Strydom and the Butler, James, by Elma Potgieter,” explained Swart.

Dinner for one presents the 90th birthday of elderly upper-class Englishwoman Miss Sophie, who hosts a dinner every year for her close friends Mr Pommeroy, Mr Winterbottom, Sir Toby and Admiral von Schneider to celebrate the occasion.

The problem is that given Miss Sophie’s considerable age, she has outlived all of her friends and so butler James makes his way around the table, impersonating each of the guests in turn.

Unfortunately for him, this means participating in each toast of the four-course dinner. Bookings for Friday evening’s show can be made at www.LTickets.co.za or call 011 815 3000.
