Pride of Springs celebrates 100th birthday

The club celebrated its centenary over the weekend.

It was the gathering of old and new friends on Saturday as the Springs Rugby Club celebrated its 100th birthday.

The event was held to honour the history and future of the club. It was a fun family event filled with laughter and frequent trips down memory lane.

“Despite the challenges, the club continues to persevere,” said club president Boeta Moodie as he addressed the crowd.

He said the club is the birthplace of great rugby players who represented the town for greater teams.

The Vintage Boere and Country Band entertained with classics from the ages.

Moodie also gave a vote of thanks to those who contributed to the club and the day’s celebrations.

“We are grateful for donations big and small. The club is where it is today because of you,” he said.

Honorary members such as Fanie Potgieter, who is the oldest living member of the club, were thanked for their unending contributions and wisdom passed to younger players.

There was music flowing, played by the Vintage Boere and Country Band, and the crowd enjoyed songs that reminded them of their glory days.

Memorabilia and commemorative braai tongs were on sale.

This served as a fundraising initiative and to give those in attendance a chance to acquire souvenirs.

Lunch was served. The festivities carried on well into the evening.
