April Fools’ Day prank sends Springsites and military enthusiasts into a frenzy
Tony da Cruz, the owner of Springs Mining and Military Museum, had the last laugh with the prank of the day.
April Fools’ Day threw Springsites and military enthusiasts into a frenzy.
Tony da Cruz, the owner of Springs Mining and Military Museum, posted on his Facebook page, Springs History of the Gold Town, that the museum had acquired a Doffie Class Submarine to display at the Murray Park Dam.
Upon first glance, the story seemed credible because the museum is known to acquire some extraordinary pieces of history.
However, on closer inspection, the “facts” of the story start to look questionable. Da Cruz laughed while explaining how he came up with a story that almost seemed believable.
“I have already had many calls asking me about this, but it’s all a joke, honestly.”
The comment section took an interesting turn when some residents immediately called him out, and others showed excitement at the prospect.
“Amazing putting Springs on the local tourism map. Well done,” said Gail Shankland, who believed the story.
Reader Jacques Bosman was sceptical, “If it wasn’t the date it is today, I would’ve believed it.”
Some had a laugh, even going as far as offering some interesting skillsets.
“Great. I am a submarine mechanic and can offer my services. I’m not cheap, normally charge per ‘fadem’, and can work without diving gear as long as I can take my coffee and sandwiches with me underwater.
“[I am] not afraid to stay under for several hours just to finish the job because I know there are no sharks in the Murray Park Dam,” said Gawie Venter with a laugh.
