Bobbies Rugby Club has become a beacon for young development
Local club's junior team keeps evolving
The Bobbies Rugby Club launched a junior team last year in response to the Springs community’s call for an additional club catering to the underprivileged parts of town.
Practice began on June 25, marking the start of a journey that proved they are more than just a rugby club; they’re a home to many youngsters across Springs.
Team manager Isabella Greyvenstein said, “With no fields, no equipment and no funds, we were driven by passion and the desire to overcome and conquer, and to prove these young people’s worth, not only to the opposition, but to themselves. Eventually, we beat the odds.”
On July 13, 2024, the new players participated in their first league games. The U6 team won 15 out of 20 league games, lost four and drew one. Their performance brought their win rate to 75%.
The U7 team won 10 matches, lost six and drew one, bringing their win rate to 59%. The U6 team was awarded overall best team, with the highest win rate among all senior and junior teams. By the end of 2024, the club had 19 players, and practice resumed on January 8.

“Today, the Bobbies Jnr Rugby Club has more than 50 kids, and we are steadily growing, with children coming from as far as Eloff and Boksburg.
“There are children less fortunate, children from the welfare system, and each has one common goal: to get on the rugby field, to matter, and to feel like they belong,” Greyvenstein said.
She praised the coaches for their impact on the players, saying they had contributed to their skills development, fitness and emotional well-being.
This year, for the first time, the club has an U10 team that will participate in the A League.
“We worked hard to recruit kids and are proud to say we have grown,” Greyvenstein said.
