Rian Radebe reflects on her makeup journey on International Makeup Artist Day
From her first lip gloss to building a luxury brand, Springs makeup artist Zandile Rian Radebe shares her story of resilience, creativity and passion this International Makeup Artist Day.
As the world marks International Makeup Artist Day on August 30, Zandile Rian Radebe (35), also known as Rian the artist, reflects on her journey, the challenges she conquered, and why makeup is more than artistry – it represents confidence, storytelling, and connection.
From the first time Radebe wore lip gloss, she knew makeup was more than beauty; it was self-expression. Now, as a luxury makeup artist, she has turned her career into creating timeless looks and custom experiences.
Speaking to the Springs Advertiser, she said her love for makeup began around 2005. However, it took her a decade to realise that makeup was something she wanted to pursue professionally.
Radebe, who lives in Sharon Park, studied Makeup Artistry through Intec College, obtained her accreditation in 2015 and started working as a retail makeup artist at Ralo Cosmetics (now called Signature) in Centurion Mall in 2015 and 2016.

She relocated to Ekurhuleni in 2017 and worked as a makeup artist and nail technician at Perfect 10, Placecol Springs Mall (2018), and Tammy Taylor Nails (2019). After all the experience, she registered her business in 2019.
“I decided to further my studies, and I have been working on my business on weekends since 2020. When Covid-19 struck, my business came to a standstill for about two years,” she said.
Her business bounced back in 2022, and she was busy every weekend. She did not have a huge clientele, only a few regular clients, some of whom booked makeup services every Saturday.
She said depression has also affected her business, as she had to pause the operations and focus on herself, but she was able to return.

Apart from being a makeup artist, Radebe is a mechanical fitter and turner. She said that one of her challenges is the competition, adding that she had to rebrand herself as a luxury makeup artist focusing on exclusivity, prestige, and experience.
“My ability to combine advanced artistry with a luxury client experience helps me specialise in creating timeless, flawless looks tailored to each individual, while offering a calm, professional, and exclusive service that ensures every client feels elegant, confident, and unforgettable,” she said.
One look that Radebe loves is creating soft, natural looks with a sultry touch, saying that this style enhances a client’s natural features with a radiant, skin-like finish while adding subtle depth and allure through the eyes or lips.
Her advice to local aspiring makeup artists is to focus on mastering their craft, being patient, and valuing quality over speed.
“Invest in learning through workshops, tutorials, and real-world experience, and never stop practising. Build a strong personal brand, maintain professionalism, and always treat your clients with care and respect.
“Most importantly, stay creative and true to your unique style. Authenticity will set you apart in a competitive industry,” said Radebe.
Radebe concluded by saying that a day like International Makeup Artist Day shines a spotlight on the creativity, skill, and dedication of makeup artists in our community.
She also said it gives local artists like her an opportunity to showcase their craft, celebrate their achievements, and connect with clients who appreciate the artistry and passion behind every look.
Her go-to tip that always works is perfecting the base:
• Skin care preparation is essential.
• Hydrated, well-primed skin allows makeup to glide on smoothly, last longer, and look naturally radiant.
• No matter the style – soft, sultry, or glamorous – a flawless base makes all the difference and instantly elevates the overall look.
