Petersfield Extension streetlights finally on after three dark months

The long-dead streetlights on Vaal Drive are shining again. For three frustrating months, resident Chris van Jaarsveld tirelessly called the CoE, with no results.

Petersfield Extension residents can finally see the light again after months of driving in darkness. The metro has repaired the streetlights on Vaal Drive following repeated complaints.

Resident Chris van Jaarsveld (64), who has lived in the area for over 20 years, said the streetlights on the road had not worked for three months, and that he called the CoE once a week about it, but received no assistance. Vaal Drive is the main entrance to the area, and many motorists and pedestrians use it.

“I called the customer call centre and they referred me to the energy department, then back to the CCC. It was a nightmare,” he said.

“I struggled to get a reference number for three months, but finally got one on November 3,” added Van Jaarsveld.

He also said other residents told him that calling the metro was pointless because it would not fix the lights.

Before the lights went off permanently, they worked for two or three days, then went off again, and some flickered, he explained.

“There are two streetlights that stay on all day on Harts Drive, off the main road, while the rest remain off,” he said.

He added that the lights on the road improve security for nearby properties.

There is also a shopping complex nearby, and he said parents sometimes send their children there before closing time, but by the time they return home, it’s already dark.

“We have drivers here who speed, especially at night, and I fear there might be an accident because drivers can’t see what’s on the road,” he said.

Van Jaarsveld thanked the Springs Advertiser for assisting with the matter, which was resolved after the publication contacted the metro. A response from the metro is still awaited.
