Springs SAPS bids farewell to veteran officer with thrilling soccer match

Springs SAPS held a soccer match at Eureka High School, celebrating Warrant Officer Moses Molepo’s 37-year journey in law enforcement.

Officers from various police stations across Springs faced off in a friendly farewell soccer match at Eureka High School.

The game was held in honour of Warrant Officer Moses Molepo, a soon-to-be pensioner who has served in law enforcement for 37 years.

Molepo, a well-known soccer enthusiast, was celebrated in the best way his colleagues knew how, through the sport he loves most.

Beyond his policing career, Molepo is also a coach who trains young footballers of different age groups. He says he plans to continue developing young talent when he returns home to Limpopo.

On November 28, the Springs SAPS officers hosted a lunch where Molepo was honoured along with three fellow colleagues, Lieutenant Colonel Kchechane Kchechane and Colonel Rosemary Nelisiwe Mkasi, who are retiring.

“My colleagues know I have played soccer with them for a long time so this was the perfect farewell. At some point, I played for the provincial team and in many stadiums across Gauteng,” Molepo said.

He added that what he will miss most about being part of the SAPS is playing soccer, emphasising the importance of staying active.

The match ended in a thrilling 7–7 draw. After the game, two team representatives, Warrant Officer Tebogo Lephoto and Captain Bernard Masethe, reflected on the action.

“It was a great game, we enjoyed ourselves although it’s been a long time since we have played. Our game plan was to enjoy ourselves and share the ball instead of running with it and we did exactly that, which is why we scored so many goals,” Lephoto said.

Masethe added, “Most of us are seniors so we decided to stretch our legs for the day to bid farewell to our colleague as he has been playing with us for so long.”

He reiterated Molepo’s message about balancing work and wellness.

“I believe it’s important to stay active. Molepo is 60 but he is still able to run around the soccer field. A healthy body is a healthy mind,” Masethe said.

He closed off with a farewell message for the man of the moment.

“A job well done to Molepo. There are so many challenges in the law enforcement so for him to sustain himself and his health for all these years takes great character,” he said.
