GALLERY: Springs seniors celebrate Valentine’s Day with music, dance and lasting love
Love was in the air as Springs Senior Citizens Club hosted its first event of the year, bringing together over 20 couples for a Valentine’s Day lunch filled with music, dancing and heartfelt moments.
Love was in the air as the Springs Senior Citizens Club hosted their first event of the year, a Valentine’s Day lunch for its members on February 13.
Over 20 couples were part of the festivities, and part of the entertainment was a local singer, Leon Van Zyl, and the yoga class, which showed some dance moves.
One of the couples, Terrace and Sylvia Abel, told the Springs Advertiser that for them, Valentine’s Day means a day as a couple to celebrate the love they have for each other after 38 years of marriage.
Terrace added that it means spending time together and also being with friends within the club. The couple has been part of the club for five years, where they participate in various activities offered by the club, including dance classes and the crocheting class.
Sylvia shared that being part of the club is one of the ways that brings them together, as it allows them to spend time together outside their home.
“Having the Lord in our lives, protecting and loving each other, has been one of the greatest factors in maintaining our marriage,” said Terrace.
The couple advised young couples to always love and trust each other no matter what and also have God as the centre of their relationship.
“They must look for the definition of love from the Bible, not what the world tells them, and you must work for your relationship,” concluded the Abels.
Club manager Pauline Houghton said that the club kicked off their event calendar with the Valentine’s Day celebration because it allows them to decorate and is a cheerful moment for the members.
“Days like this are extremely important for the members, especially for their mental wellbeing, because sitting on your own for the whole week as an elderly person may be stressful and may cause depression,” said Houghton.
“Celebrations are one of the ways of combating loneliness and meeting other people. It will have the members talking about it for months to come, to their friends and families as well,” shared the club manager.
The next celebration for the club will be St Patrick’s Day in March.
