Springs Mine and Military Museum to host military re-enactment display
Curator Errol Brits said the event aims to educate and inspire young people to learn more about military history.
The Springs Mine and Military Museum will be hosting a military re-enactment display on March 21 from 09:00.
Historical equipment will be shown, and there will be a memorabilia sale. The museum’s curator, Errol Brits, told the Springs Advertiser that the display aims to develop and empower the youth with military history.
He explained that each person displaying it will be a professional on the equipment and will be able to answer questions that may arise. He said that as a museum, they are also hoping to find young people who are passionate about military history to join them at the museum as docents.
On display will be memorabilia from the Anglo-Boer War, the American Army and the South African Bush War. Brits said that the public will have the opportunity to view specialised collectors’ military items and equipment.
“Demonstrations will be personal with the public under supervision and will be allowed to handle equipment in a soldier’s world,” said the curator.
Brits shared that the various youth organisations will be in attendance to recruit the youth. He said that these organisations train young people in skills that they normally would not learn at home.
Apart from the museum, the other key participants include the Military Collectors and Re-enactment Society, the Gunners Association SA, the SA Air Force Association East Rand, the Royal Air
Force Association and various military vendors. The Benoni High Caledonian band will be performing at the event.
