Bakerton cemetery fence fixed at last

The Addie once again highlighted the issue surrounding the deterioration of the concrete walling around the Bakerton cemetery.

The article ‘Bakerton Cemetery’s fence needs fixing (Advertiser, November 6) refers.

In 1997, when I was the councillor of Bakerton the then Springs town council, at my request, constructed the concrete fencing around the cemetery.

Over the years, I have been receiving innumerable complaints from the residents of Bakerton and old Payneville concerning the condition of the cemetery.

Daily people can be seen visiting the burial place of their ancestors, some of whom were interred there more than 100 years ago

It is also sad to see some of the tombstones have been destroyed by insensitive people.

Each tombstone or grave tells a story of someone precious who may have only lived a few years or to a good old age.

Hopefully preserving the burial place preserves a memory and reminds us of the immortality of our souls and that there is a life hereafter.

Burying the dead is an ancient practice but with the municipalities running out of space it is going to be a challenge in the future.

Having said all of the above, I thank this newspaper and the metro for taking heed of our request and repairing the fencing around the cemetery.

Ramesh Sheodin,
Ward councillor.
