Sick as a doglet

Eish! I was almost a dead doglet.

Am, in fact, still a pretty sick little doglet.

Am not out of the woods just yet but with half the world rooting for me, and the excellent care that I am getting in hospital we’re praying that all will be well.

It started on the night of February 5 (Thursday).

I felt a bit off and threw up my dinner in the middle of the night.

Naturally mom thought I had eaten something dodgy, so she threw out my yummy liver and gave me normal old dog food the next night.

But I threw that up too.

Mom started stressing.

She figured maybe it was my pellets that had become infected or something – so she stopped giving me those.

Let’s furry face it. I am not a doglet who gets sick.

The worst I’ve ever done is damage my little legs playing ball.

On Saturday I could hear them debating whether or not we should go for our walk in the veld.

Thumped my tail.

Of course we should go.

So we went, but had only walked a few meters when I felt just too plain tired to carry on.

Mom looked at me…

You want to turn around Fudgie-wena?

Hells yeah!

Did a prompt about turn and we all tootled off back to the car.

That night I got plain steak.

It was delicious and I devoured it all… but in the early hours of the morning I hooched that up too.

Feh! Was truly feeling a tad under the weather.

Alpha called the vet first thing Sunday morning and off we went.

A nice dressing gown dudette checked me out.

She poked me all over then looked at my gums and pronounced they were a very nasty colour.

A sure indication that I was not a well doglet.

Duh! I could have told her that.

Turns out I have something called Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA).

It mainly targets female dogs from the age of six and a half.

There are no reasons why.

I had x-rays, scans and all sorts of tests to check that there were no sneaky tumors squatting in my bod.

Nothing.

Basically my immune system is killing off my healthy red blood cells.

But I had two blood transfusions and the nice doctors are treating me with steroids and other stuff.

All your prayers and good wishes are really appreciated by both me and mom.
