Bob Gillies, a longtime resident of Springs is not happy with what he is seeing around town.
He writes:
As I drive around Springs it seems the Parks Department is doing absolutely nothing about the overgrowth of grass and weeds in the suburbs, parks and in town itself.
There are traffic islands and street corners with such high weeds you cannot see approaching traffic.
The entrance bend to Springs from Ermelo Road had grass growing from the park down the wall onto the pavement and weeds a metre high.
This is the case through town.
Nigel Road sports a complete row of weeds in the centre islands. Covid-19 cannot be blamed for this.
The refuse truck and workers are coming as normal to collect our bins, so how is it that Parks Department are exempt from their work?
It cannot be because they have no PPE, what does a worker need? A R20 mask and spray of sanitiser.
Workers with spades could easily be sent into town to chop the weeds out of the kerbs and pavements. If this is not done the weeds will seed and thousands more will emerge next summer.
Also, if they are not cut down and removed there will be a danger of fires in the town from discarded, and in winter the vagrants setting fire to anything at hand to keep warm.
If this overgrowth is left unchecked it will not be able to be mowed or cut with line trimmers .
What plan has the Parks Department got to address this issue?
I think us ratepayers deserve an answer to this as Springs is looking the worst it ever has.
