Boxing tournament

The Bert Collins Boxing Club will hold a tournament on November 16 at the club behind PAM Brink Stadium.

Starting with weigh-in at 9am, and boxing starts at noon.

Two club boxers Kobus Nienaber and Gerhard Thysse will face their opponents on the day.

“It will be the fourth time Kobus will be in the ring to defend his title,” says coach Jeanette Dyzel.

Although he is of small build, he is well trained and will stop for nothing as he climbs through the ropes. His opponents usually have to stand firm to his punches.

Jeanette adds on the other hand there is Gerhard, who is someone who assert himself well and won bronze at the recent SA Elite Championships.

“Parents are very wary of boxing because it’s a contact sport, but what many do not know is that amateur boxing is the safest contact sport. The fighter’s safety is our first priority,” says Jeanette.

At all the tournaments, a doctor is present. The boxers are given a full annual medical examination and declared fit by a doctor before they are allowed into the boxing ring.

Before each tournament, a doctor examines these boxers again to see if everything is ok.

Jeanette adds box is used successfully to help abused and molested children to take their rightful place in society again.Club practice takes place every Monday and Thursday from 6pm to 8pm.

Entry fee R5 per adults and children R2. Secure parking is available.
