African Tigers FC is celebrating the selection of its U12 goalkeeper, Qailah Choughlay, who is set to represent the Easterns Schools Football Association (ESFA) at the Fran Hilton Smith Tournament from August 6 to 9.

Her grandfather and coach, Imtiaz Choughlay, described her selection as a proud moment for both her family and the club.

“Qailah has become well known as a goalkeeper in the Easterns Local Football Association. This is a milestone in her football career and also serves as motivation for the players at African Tigers Football Club,” he said.

Choughlay believes Qailah’s leadership qualities played a key role in earning her a place in the ESFA squad.

“She is very motivated and communicates well with her teammates, guiding them on the field. That is what selectors look for, a player who can lead from the back,” he explained.

Qailah was thrilled when she received the news.

“She was excited to represent her school and proud to achieve her Eastern Schools Association colours,” Choughlay said.

Having coached football for more than 50 years, Choughlay has played an important role in his granddaughter’s development.

“I have been involved in football for over 50 years and have guided her to understand the concepts of the game,” he said.

He believes competing at the Fran Hilton Smith Tournament will be another important step in her development.

“To represent Easterns is a great achievement. This experience will help improve her football and, hopefully, one day she can represent Banyana Banyana.

“Attending her games gives me so much excitement. I cannot describe the feelings I have when I watch her play,” he said.

Imtiaz hopes Qailah’s achievement inspires other young footballers at African Tigers and in the Bakerton community.

“You have to be dedicated to the sport you play, and I think her selection will encourage our players,” he said.

He believes Qailah has a bright future if she continues to work hard.

“She is still young and I would like to see her excel in the sport she loves. My dream is for the youth in the club to follow in her footsteps.

“African Tigers has produced many successful players and I believe our players represent the Bakerton community well because sport brings people together,” he said.
