Hundreds descend on old ArcelorMittal yard to pick up “slag”.

Forget the diamond rush! There is a new type of rush currently happening in Vereeniging and it is called the “slag rush”!

VEREENIGING.- Hundreds of people have descended on a piece of land between Steel Road, Houtkop Way and the Klip River in Duncanville to pick up slag, a stony waste matter separated from metals during the smelting or refining of ore.

The process is currently underway to extract slag from the soil of the property that was previously used by Iscor, the company that commenced trading under the name of Mittal Steel South Africa Limited in March 2005, now known as ArcelorMittal

People are seen carrying pieces of slag from the yard, placing them in white plastic bags and then leaving the property. The fences surrounding the property have been cut.
