eMalahleni unites for ‘Run for the Silent’ GBV memorial
Community members turned frustration over rising violence statistics into action, calling for lasting impact and remembering every woman who never made it home.
Locals in eMalahleni laced up on September 26 for a memorial run held to honour victims of gender-based violence (GBV).
The ‘Run for the Silent’ event aimed to raise awareness around GBV and honour the lives lost.
Frustration turns into action
“This was a memorial run to remember every life that has been lost,” said Preann Naidoo. “The event was born out of frustration at continuously reading rising GBV statistics and being told by government to take safety precautions that women are already taking.”
“Hopefully this doesn’t just start now, but actually makes an impact that lasts,” added Joshua Banda.
“We didn’t just run today, we ran for every name we have seen in the headlines,” said participant Andile Zwane. “For every woman who never made it home. It was heavy, but it was powerful.”
