Shacks problems at Extension 12

Residents of Extension 12 were up in arms after shacks were put up in the soccer ground, which also serves as a voting station.

The residents gathered at the soccer field on Saturday morning, January 18 and wanted to dismantle the three shacks, but their ward councillor who was accompanied by some committee members, stopped them.

The group of residents said the area was reserved for a soccer field and was also used as a voting station and it was well known that previously some people were moved away from that area.

The residents said they noticed that the unknown people said they had been given permission to build in the area by the ward councillor Timothy Lukhele. According to the residents, when they contacted the ward councilor, he denied any knowledge of the people putting up the shacks.

“We have been in this area long enough to know that that area was reserved for the soccer ground and serves as a voting station during elections times. These people are delaying development in our area; they just come here and put up their shacks. We are over populated as we speak, we cannot afford to have more people settling here. To make matter worse, these people are so arrogant,” said the residents.

The residents said some of them have been moved to other areas, during the rezoning in the ward, while some said they are without water and electricity in a process, which is part of the development in the area and cannot tolerate people who just move and settle anywhere.

Cllr Lukhele told the residents that he does not know the people settling in the area. In addressing the residents, Cllr Lukhele promise the people that he will meet with his ward committee and the residents representatives to settle the matter. It was later resolved that the people need to dismantle their shacks and move out of the area. Only one shack remained in the area and the owner was given until February to move out of the area. Cllr Lukhele thanked the residents for being his eyes and ears and for their cooperation in dealing with such sensitive matters.
