The incident happened on Wednesday, February 19.
The 24-year-old woman was on her way home when she received a call from someone who pretended to be a client and was interested in buying a policy.
When she arrived in Ga-Nala (Kriel) she waited for the person. She had described earlier the car she was driving and asked him to wait for her as it was late in the evening.
When she stopped at the road crossing two men got into her car. She drove with them, while approaching her home she was threatened with a firearm and she was told to stop the car. The men took over and drove away with her, leaving her on Kinross Road. She later got assistance and was able to report the matter to the police.
A case of car hijacking was opened and the next morning, through investigation, the police recovered the silver Polo Vivo and arrested three suspects in possession of unlicensed firearms in Middelburg area. The men appeared in Kriel Magistrate’s Court on Monday, February 24 and their case was postponed until March 3 for formal bail application.
The police would to request the community when confronted with such situation to take the following hints:
*Always aim to survive the crime, accept the situation.
*Do exactly what you are told by the suspects.
*Surrender and don’t fight back.
*Don’t reach for any valuable items in the car.
*Answer the questions truthfully even when shocked.
*Try to remain calm and after they have left the scene report to the police immediately. Remember that property can be replace but not lives.
Kriel police also made 13 other arrests during their daily operations. Suspects who were arrested were between 17 and 46 years old and were apprehended for different crimes such as assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, possession of suspected stolen property, violation of court order, hijacking, shoplifting and use of motor vehicle without owner’s consent.
