Community outreach programme held

District mayor led a delegation of councillors to conduct outreach visits to various local municipalities during the first two months of the year.

Nkangala District Municipality led by the executive mayor, Cllr Speedy Mashilo, accompanied by the speaker of the district, Cllr B. Nkwanyana, mayoral committee members and all councillors both in the district and local municipalities conducted an outreach visits to various local municipalities during January and February.

An outreach meeting was held at Hlalanikahle Community Hall on Saturday, February 22.

According to the district, the purpose of the outreach visits was to give feedback on the achievements and progress made in the implementation of the Integrated Development Planning (IDP) service delivery projects in the financial year 2013/2014. Also most importantly was to consult and listen to the new issues raised by the communities and to be incorporated to the Annual IDP review of 2014.

In his address Cllr Mashilo said he has been deployed by the ANC to lead the district. He also explained that only South Africans can qualify for RDP houses and that they start with the elderly, the disabled and the rest of the other beneficiaries. Cllr Mashilo explained there was a backlog in houses that is why there were houses for rental for people who are employed here.

The issue of land was also discussed at length and that government has come with other programmes to address the land issue.
Health issues were also discussed and that HIV and teenage pregnancies were problems. Parents were encouraged to take care of their children.

Cllr Mashilo told Masakhane residents that a committee has been elected to hold talks with the plot owner and to develop the land.
The issue of MNS and sinkholes was also tabled and talks are being held to find a way forward.

Cllr Mashilo also explained about the upgrades, replacement of bulk water supply line in Ackerville to Lynnville, upgrades at Church and Twala street, installation of water storm water management systems, reconstruction of damage streets in Phola and Ka-Nala, upgrade of Klarinet Pump Station, provision of sewer network at Clewer, rezoning and sub division of Hlalanikahle, feasibility study of Speekfontein Farm, supply and delivery of two sets of rescue tolls, construction of five chalets at Witbank Dam, feasibility study for weighbridge facility at eMalaheni, replacement of steel pipes in Steenkamp Street and many more other projects. Other issues were raised and discussed as well during the meeting.

The department of home affairs and the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) were part of the programme to distribute ID’s and register people in order to vote in the national elections of 2014.
