Four teenagers, Sibongile Nkuna (12), Duduzile Maboke (8), Sizwe Mahlangu (12) and Karobo Molope (13), went to buy sweets for each other to celebrate Valentines in Vosman. They had just left the shop when a car came speeding in their direction. They said they tried to run away but it followed them. The accident happened at about 18:00.
According to witnesses the car first hit one of the children on the legs, hitting the next one who flew through the air, hitting the wall of the store. Another one was hit in the face and the car came for the fourth, who was hit in the stomach and fell on the bonnet of the car.
According to the children the woman driver did not stop. It is required by law to stop after an accident.
The children were rushed to hospital and the parents only realised at the hospital that the same car had hit all four children.
“We were all at home when we received the message about the accident and the children were taken to hospital by different cars. What happened to our children was very sad. The suspect was never arrested and no blood samples were taken from her. Vosman police disappointed us because we were never updated about the case until we stood up to find out. The accident happened on February 14, we went to the police station on Monday, March 24 and we were told to come back on Wednesday, March 26. We received no clear answers about the case. We spent almost the whole day at the police station. Somebody is not telling the truth here. Is this what we call justice?” asked one of the parents.
The parents said the suspect is well known in the area and there are some allegations that she won’t be arrested.
“While our children are not attending school the suspect walks proudly free in the streets. The children have been affected by the accident and they will need medical help as well counseling. One of the children only eats cereal food and liquid only. Another child has been sent home from school and the teachers are complaining that he does not cope.”
Captain Klaas Maloka said a case has been opened and was sent to court for the public prosecutor to make a decision.
