Video: First team hockey player struck by lightning
A first team hockey player from Hoër Tegniese Skool (HTS) was struck by lightning on the rugby field as he made his way down to the hockey field to join his team mates as the team prepared to take on ‘Potch’ in a match.
On Tuesday, March 17 at approximately 14:40 Francois Clarence, a Grade 11 learner walked off of the hockey field with the rest of his team before the match against Potchefstroom started due to bad weather.
Just before Francois reached the top of the A rugby field a bolt of lightning struck and hit him, sending him to the ground.
Ambu-Training personnel were first on scene; and immediately started with Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
Langamed Emergency Services arrived on scene and they took over CPR.
The rest of the school looked on with tears in their eyes as the ambulance stood for a couple of minutes before transporting him to hospital.
Francois was taken to Life Cosmos Hospital where Dr Wayne Banks, staff from Langamed and other hospital staff members continued working on him.
