Mabande learners crowned national winners with AI walking cane
The trio secured top honours at the JA South Africa competition and will now represent the country at the continental finals in Cape Town this December.
Three Mabande Comprehensive High School learners were crowned overall winners at the JA South Africa National Company of the Year Competition.
Sbahle Motau, Lungelo Mthethwa and Hlelo Sibanyoni won R50 000 over the weekend for WalkWise, an AI-powered smart walking cane designed to help visually impaired people navigate safely and independently.
The smart cane uses GPS, cameras, sensors and sonar to detect obstacles and provide directions, with voice alerts delivered through wireless earbuds.
Innovative navigation
“Our WalkWise journey has been challenging but rewarding. There were moments when we felt like giving up, but through teamwork, determination and faith in God, we kept going. Winning was an unforgettable moment that showed us the importance of believing in our dreams,” said WalkWise team member Hlelo Sibanyoni.
“We plan to use the R50 000 to develop our AI-powered smart cane and bring it closer to the visually impaired people who need it. Our mission is to promote independence, confidence and give everyone the freedom to walk,” added Sibanyoni.
The WalkWise team also took home the competition’s Innovation Award, while learner Sbahle Motau was recognised with a Delta LEAD Girls Award.
The team will now represent South Africa at the JA Africa Company of the Year Competition in Cape Town in December.
