The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is investigating the alleged assault on a civilian by police two weeks ago.

Ms Mpho Moete, IPID media relations officer, said this matter is receiving full attention from the police watchdog.

“Investigators from IPID visited me on Saturday, February 13 and I relived all the details of that incident when I shared my experience with them,” Mr Lourens Erasmus said.

Erasmus was allegedly assaulted by four policemen from Kriel SAPS on February 6 inside the police station.
Erasmus said his ordeal began when he noticed a suspicious car and phoned 112 to report it. He gave his address and was transferred to Kriel SAPS. After allegedly slamming the phone down in his ears several times, a police van stopped in front of his yard and asked him to accompany them to give a statement regarding the suspicious car.

But, Erasmus said, everything went horribly wrong when the policemen allegedly closed the security door leading into the police station and assaulted him.
Erasmus said the four policemen accused him of being a journalist and allegedly hit and kicked him.

“During the assault a sergeant stood on my throat, I could not breathe. There were so many things running through my head I thought I was going to die….”
