Over the years residents of eMalahleni, specifically that of Del Judor Proper, have had to deal with a most unpleasant and disgusting smell – but that could soon change.
A R10-million tender has been awarded to a contractor to fix and rehabilitate the sewer spillage in Del Judor Proper.
This boasts good news for residents who will no longer have to worry about the health risks they face in the area, or where that sordid stench is coming from the next time they open their front door.
The good news came on Wednesday June 14 when WITBANK NEWS received word that the tender had been awarded.
“We have had many complaints over the years and I am relieved that finally something had been done about it,” said Cllr Marianne Venter, Ward 24 Cllr.
Cllr Venter mentioned in an interview that she posed a number of questions to Mr Theo van Vuuren, acting municipal manager and was awaiting answers.

A tender was awarded to repair the sewage system in Del Judor Proper.
Questions such as who is this contractor that will be spearheading the project, when will work be started on the sewage issue, and how soon can people expect to see work being done on site, as well as when can we expect the project to be finished.
The news came as a boon after years of struggling to get answers and solutions to the problem plaguing the area.
Specifically the dam in Louise Street which in past years was victim to a high count in Escherichia-Coli (E-Coli), 2 420 units per 100ml to be specific, which was far above the norm and posed as a major health hazard to residents in the area.
Another issue expected to be tackled is the sewage system and collector line from Del Judor Extensions via Afrisam quarry to Model Park Proper which was in previous years blocked.
Previously the Emalahleni Municipality commented that the estimated costs to repair the line are quite high, for instance the design and supervision costs, preliminary and general costs, as well as excavation costs will amount to R1.95-million. Additionally the supply and lay of the sewer piping will cost close to R3-million.
WITBANK NEWS contacted Mr van Vuuren for comment regarding the details of the tender to which he replied that a response would be given once the Municipality has updated all requirements.
