Man who dies in abandoned mine pit will be buried this weekend

The man who was buried under a pile of rocks last week has formally been identified.

The man who was buried under a pile of rocks last week has formally been identified.

Mr Donald Sambo (27) lost his life on Wednesday, July 26 while he was digging for coal in an abandoned mine pit adjacent to the Old Middelburg Road.

Sambo was a soon to be dad. He lived in Old Coronation with his five-month pregnant girlfriend.

Sambo’s sister, Amanda said her brother will be buried on Saturday, August 5 in Tonga Malelane where he grew up with his grandmother.

“My brother was a bright young man with so many dreams. Despite having two distinctions in matric he could not find a work. He came to eMalahleni in search of a job,” Amanda said.

The Mines Rescue Team and two members of the SAPS Search and Rescue unit from Middelburg took six hours to retrieve Sambo’s body.
