Klarinet newborn doing well after being found in dustbin
A resident heard noises coming from a dustbin and made a discovery that led to a newborn being rushed to hospital.
An abandoned newborn baby boy found in a dustbin in Klarinet is reported to be doing well in hospital. The baby was found alive on October 15 before being rushed to hospital, where he is currently receiving medical care.
According to police, officers received a complaint at around 19:00 regarding an abandoned child. Upon arrival at the scene, a resident explained that he was walking home when he heard noises coming from a dustbin. Upon checking inside, he discovered the baby wrapped in a blanket.
Police search for mother
The Witbank Police Station has opened a case of child abandonment, and a search for the mother is under way.
Station spokesperson Warrant Officer David Ratau said child abandonment is a serious criminal offence and appealed to the public to come forward with any information that could help trace the mother.
“We are urging mothers who may be struggling after giving birth not to abandon their babies, but to seek help from social workers or at a safe haven where they can be assisted confidentially and without judgement,” Ratau said.
